How do students in Afghanistan learn and what conditions do they face? Within the framework of our domestic project and together with experts and educators, we have developed teaching materials about Afghanistan and the current education crisis. At the same time, we are finding solutions to overcome this complex crisis situation within the framework of sustainable development cooperation.
The goal of this domestic project was to share the knowledge gained from many years of work in project countries such as Afghanistan in Germany as well, and to sensitize students in Germany to the lives of Afghans and to convey the relevance of education for sustainable development cooperation in an age-appropriate way using the situation in Afghanistan as an example.
The German curriculum does not sufficiently address the living conditions and effects of crises on poorer and war-affected cultural groups. Pupils have even less contact with the topic of development work as a whole.
In exchange with experts and educators, the desire for a teaching concept has arisen in which students deal with foreign life realities and acquire an intercultural awareness. Knowledge about the causes and consequences of flight and migration as well as about sustainable development cooperation strengthens students’ ability to participate in society as a whole and helps them to view complex situations from a different perspective.

With these teaching materials, we show students the crisis situation in Afghanistan, address the education situation there and present approaches to solutions within the framework of sustainable development cooperation. It is our goal to reach students in this country, to teach them the value of education and the empowerment it brings for a self-determined life with far-reaching perspectives. The lessons are designed to inspire empathy and understanding for their peers in Afghanistan, while at the same time strengthening a sense of responsibility for those who do not have access to education.
The teaching materials are designed for grades 9 and 10 at high schools and district schools, and thus convey the challenging content in an age-appropriate manner. Our materials cover approximately 6-8 lessons, are interactive and multimedia-based. In addition, we offer further handouts as well as information events and further training for teachers and are available to answer questions.
